Some of you know that we tried to adopt a rescue dog a while back and things didn’t go well. I know that some people get very passionate about adopting abandoned dogs, and we tried, but here’s what we found: You have no idea where that dog has been or what it has been through that will affect its behavior. You don’t have any way of knowing if it has been abused or mistreated leading it to be aggressive when it gets scared. We experienced that. Not fun.
So this time we went a different route. Jake’s parents’ neighbor’s dog had puppies (I think the apostrophes are in all the right places there…), and he offered us one. We were a little unsure about the prospect of having a chihuahua a first (did I mention it was a chihuahua?), but he is WONDERFUL! His name is Sam (thanks, Moriah, for the great name idea). Just look at this face:

How could you not love something with a face like that? He is such a good puppy, too. We’ve read and be told over and over that crate-training is the best thing for a dog. So last night we put him in his little crate on the floor in our bedroom, and he did not make a sound all night. This morning he was just sitting in there patiently waiting for me to take him out, AND the crate was clean. No little “messes.”

He sleeps a lot right now. He was 7 weeks old on Thursday, so he’s still got a lot of growing to do. He’ll get excited a play for about 5 or 10 minutes, then he’s worn out. He’s asleep in my lap right now. :-)

Let me lay out some ground rules though:
First, he is NOT a girl. He is a manly chihuahua. Don’t be mistaken about this.
Second, he is NOT our child. We love him, but he is a pet, and he will know us as Jake and Diana, not Mom and Dad. Don’t get me wrong, he will be spoiled. But he will be a spoiled pet, not a spoiled child.
Third, I’m pretty sure he speaks Spanish. Or at least English with a Mexican accent. Although he’s not very vocal just yet.

So there you have it. He’s such a good dog. And sooooo sweet!

Jake & Diana are having a baby boy!
He is too cute!
Precious!!!!!!!
Ella suelta. Nadie quiere un shedder.
Hope para verle pronto, Andrew
Andrew’s message, as translated by Google Translate:
Sam, welcome to the family. I hope you have a wonderful time in New Orleans. There are a few things you need to remember. Diana is responsible, but Jake gets what he wants. If you want something, follow Jakes lead. Second, neighbors are friendly, but are tired of Sadie. She released. Nobody wants an Shedden.
Hope to see you soon, Andrew
I think either google or Andrew messed something up right there at the end…
i’m not usually one for chihuahuas…..and maybe its just diana’s superior photography skills…but i have to agree. he is cute
LOOK OUT!!!!!!!! YOU GOT A NUTRIA RUNNING AROUND YOUR HOUSE!!!!!!! :)
You didn’t say you were getting a “Rat Dog” from Randy and Sally. That thing’s so ugly it’s cute. I would say “Yo cero Taco Bell.” but that would be too easy. Andrew you forgot to warn him. Here let me: Cuidado con el ruido de el acordeón! There he should be ready to enter the Jake and Diana world.
SUPER ADORABLE, and he needs a play date with Greta ASAP.
Amen sister on not calling yourself mom and dad for a dog!! I totally agree – it’s a dog, not a child!
cute puppy.
How cute!! HE REALLY IS ADORABLE!!
