USS New York

On Tuesday morning the USS New York came down the Mississippi headed to New York to be commissioned.

Built with almost eight tons of steel salvaged from the World Trade Center, felled during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the $1.2 billion USS New York departs Northrop Grumman about 7 a.m., and is expected to pass near the French Quarter around 8:15 a.m.

Tuesday happened to be a foggy morning, but I rode my bike down to the Quarter to try and get some pictures of it. I have never taken pictures in the fog which made it very difficult, especially since Diana was not there for me to ask any questions. :-)

This is the famous Natchez. You can see how foggy it was since I was standing pretty stinkin close to it.

This guy was making me feel as if I was on the scene of a sad pirate movie. He was playing Amazing Grace and it felt dreadful.

I was surprised to see how many people came out to see this thing float down the river. One thing about New Orleans that I love is that the people here really know how to show their pride in something, whether it’s the Saints, their Mardi Gras, or their country.

After waiting for over an hour, when the ship came down in front of the Quarter you could hardly see it.

After the ship passed, I was walking back to my bike, and there was a man playing something on the trumpet. I cannot remember the name of the song, but he had several people standing around him all teary-eyed. I really had no idea that this would be an emotional day. I guess the symbolism of what the ship stood for, all those people who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks and the solders who are still fighting today, can really bring out the emotions.
